Leadership is all about guiding people to the most valuable tasks, training them to do it well, and motivating people to work their hardest. This requires a well-established set of behavioral techniques, techniques that I discuss at length in my book, The Leadership Push. But something that strikes as interesting is that often the big elaborate behaviors work no better than the simple obvious ones.
We all want our workers to go the extra mile. The harder they work, the more the team succeeds. When the team wins, everyone wins.
Excuses are the enemy of performance. They sour our ambition. They drain our motivation. They justify our failure. Success for leaders and workers alike depends on overcoming excuses in order to realize our fullest potential.
People assess your ability (competence) in an opposite way that they assess your intentions (warmth).
Leaders hoard power when they unnecessarily restrict the power of their people to act. This can take many forms. For example:
Leadership has an accepted progression, each step building on the previous step. If you want to be a great leader, then you need to master all of the steps.
