When I was a young boy, all of my heroes were Wild West cowboys. Movies depicted rugged, lonesome frontiersman. They rode into town reluctantly, but they would eventually load the massive responsibility squarely on their shoulders to save it. This is what I thought a hero was, a highly competent loner who saved the day on his own terms.

As a leader, you must be a delegator. Leadership does not mean being the person who does the most important jobs. That would make you a skilled worker, not a skilled leader. Leaders achieve results through other people, coordinating and motivating the work of others.

There's a common misconception when I explain the Köhler Effect. And I hope to add some clarity to it now.

Sometimes is not what you do, but how you do it.

People love to complain about their leaders, be they politicians, business leaders, or sports team managers. It's easy for people to see the benefits of leadership and the troubles of being a follower. When surveyed, most people say that they wish they were big, important CEOs of successful companies. They see the benefits of such a position, but they don't see the downsides.

Leadership is all about motivating performance from others. You’ve got to delegate tasks, train people on the job, hold them accountable, and motivate them to do their best. One of the most important skills you need to master is to activate the Köhler Effect.
