When workers are distracted by their daily tasks they can't see the big picture. This blinds them to the true meaning of their work, which demotivated them. Nobody does their best work when the work itself feels meaningless. And this is a risk for every busy, distracted worker.
The world has changed a lot recently. It used to be that the only way to spend time with someone was to be face-to-face, and the only excuse to do was to dine together. But that’s not the case anymore. Now we have smart phones, video conferences, and digital events. Now we have remote workers and travel restrictions. It has become at the same time easier to connect, but more difficult to connect properly.
Do people work exclusively for the paycheck? Absolutely not! People work for meaning.
Leadership is all about getting the best out of your people. Your goal is to elicit extraordinary performance from ordinary people is your goal. You can even use this as a yardstick for your efforts. When you see ordinary people giving their best effort, then your leadership efforts are working. Their performance indicates that you are doing something right.
It's easy to say the wrong thing. Just speak your mind, and let words come out of your mouth as soon as they pop into your head. Follow this strategy, and you will make plenty of mistakes.
Great leaders know that small changes can make a big difference.
